THE COTTAGES ON CHINA LAKE

1270 Lakeview Drive  |  China, Maine 04358

Other not-to-be-missed day trips include  driving to the coast for ocean cruises, whale watching, and lobster right off the boat. The beautiful seacoast towns of Camden, Rockport, and Rockland, Maine are all just an hour away, with the closest oceanfront town of Belfast, Maine just a 40-minute drive from The Cottages on China Lake.

Fishing boats and cruises leave these coastal towns to explore the islands, lighthouses, and wildlife. The closest whale watching cruise is one hour and 15 minutes south of China, out of Boothbay Harbor, Maine.

A meal of lobster and corn-on-the-cob is a favorite, before heading back from the seacoast. Certainly, the seafood in Maine is as fresh and delicious as anywhere in the world.

The ocean is great in summer, sure. But not everyone loves saltwater — the dry cling on the skin, the parched lips. New England is home to more freshwater lakes and ponds than you can shake a bag of Cape Cod potato chips at. Here are some salt-free swimming, fishing, and boating options that are anything but bland.

The land of lakes

Maine might be celebrated for its dramatic, rocky coastline, but it also has more than 6,000 lakes and ponds. Standouts include Moosehead, Sebago, the Rangeley Lakes, China Lake, and Belgrade Lakes.

China, Maine is in the mid-coastal region of Maine. China Lake is seven miles long and its pristine waters are the perfect place to swim, snorkel, kayak, canoe, and paddle board. The lake is also a favorite destination for families who love bass fishing, whether on the dock or in a canoe. Fishing boats also can be rented at the head of China Lake.

Area day trips can include antiquing, exploring hiking trails, and whitewater river rafting. For those who like to golf, the Natanis Golf Course is a beautiful 20-minute drive around the lake from The Cottages.

Just 15 minutes away is Waterville, Maine, home to Colby College — with movie theaters, restaurants, name-brand stores, and small shops.

Waterville has an International Film Festival in July, a Public Library with events for children and adults, an Opera House with performances by the Bossov Ballet Theatre, and distinct Monday night movies on the big screen throughout the summer from Railroad Square Cinema.

Another 15-minute drive from The Cottages is the town of Windsor, Maine. The Windsor Historical Museum has thirteen buildings set in the image of a small Maine village, including a Blacksmith Shop, School House, and Carriage Shed.

A favorite area event for over 100 years is the Windsor Fair, held during the first week of September. Entertainment includes harness racing, barrel racing, fair rides, fireworks, a large exhibit of farm animals, and various pulling contests with horses, steer, oxen, and tractors. Special musical entertainment this year features Bob Marley.
